It’s Halloween which means it’s time for ghosts and ghouls to come out and play. A time when we take it in turns to scare each other with pranks and to tell chilling stories around the campfire. Well, we don’t have a campfire but we do have some horrifying financial ghost stories. This one is called:
The Tale Of The Stolen Passport Zombie
Many years ago a British man named Brian was holidaying in Germany. He was having a fantastic time until the moment he reached into his bag to find… his passport was gone! It had vanished like a ghost.
While the situation was distressing at the time, Brian eventually sorted things out, he moved on and forgot all about the illusive passport. But little did he know, that the passport would come back to haunt him!
Ten years later, and the day was like any other day. The sun was shining, bread was toasting in the toaster and all was well. At least, it was until there came a ‘THUD’ at the door. Brian ran to the door and picked up the cause of the noise.
It was a letter and it was from an address he didn’t recognise.
Slowly Brian opened the envelope and he instantly wished he hadn’t because inside it was the beginning of a waking nightmare that would affect both him and his family for a long time.
The letter was from the German government saying he owed them £130,000 in unpaid tax and suddenly the stolen passport from years ago had risen like a zombie from the dead and was now upon him.
Someone had used that stolen passport to steal Brian’s identity and commit fraud in his name, racking up enormous debts that he was now liable for.
Having his identity stolen ruined Brian’s life for years, dragging him and his family through financial hardship as well as the courts as they fought for justice.
All because of a stolen passport that came back to haunt him.
If only Brian had known that checking your Noddle credit report is a great way to spot if your identity has been stolen.
Brian is a made up character but to read the real life example that this story was based on, here’s the link.
